.s. and is about to leave eastern canada. we tally the storm aftermath. >>> and the redskins make the final cuts to the roster. who is in and who is out as we head toward the season opener against the dallas cowboys. >>> good morning and welcome to fox 5 morning news sunday. i'm melanie alnwick. sarah simmons is off today. we have several developments in the recovery from the gulf spill. >>> but a house fire in the district. this started around 4:00 in the 4900 block of minnesota avenue northeast. the flames quickly spread. at one point the home was fully engulfed and the home is a total loss. the owners were not home at the time and the heat was so intense that an adjacent home suffered damage. we have no word on the cause. >>> well now to the latest on earl. the storm is weakening as it heads away from canada's eastern coast and the storm is being blamed for one death in nova scotia. a man drowned trying to tie up his boat. a lot are without power. in new england, earl spared cape cod before heading to canada. by 60 mile-per-hour winds pounded this home. parts of it actually slid into the sea

to canada as this category 3 storm draws closer. but forecasters now say the storms should weak ton a category 2 by the time it scrapes up against north carolina's outer banks later tonight and possibly down to a category 1 when it goes by or into massachusetts. nasa now has provided a new image of earl. the space agency reports it took this shot, just after midnight eastern time today and even though earl has lost some of the power since then, you can still get a sense of how enormous this storm is. hours ago, north carolina's governor warned folks in the storm's path it's time to evacuate because in her words, better safe than sorry. >> let me make this very clear to the people of north carolina. once the storm comes in, and it becomes serious, once it is at its worst point, we are not going to put any emergency worker in harm's way. and so if you think there is going to be a problem, evacuate now, but there will be nobody to answer that phone or to come up physically to your house from your local area until the brunt of the storm passes. >> shepard: and a lot of north carolinaens

, it really should be making its way up to eastern canada. precip, we could see a couple of inches on top of what we saw for portions of eastern north carolina, and the heaviest of rain really for new england and eastern long island, but the good news is we've downgraded the storm, so obviously, this is not up to date, so we're down to a cat one, but the track is basically the same, just brushing eastern massachusetts. so we could still see a big hit from the hurricane across this region and we're going to have to monitor that, but the good news is the storm is weakening and it's moving quickly, you know, so we can just cross our fingers jenna. that's the best case scenario and we'll all have a fantastic labor day weekend once earl is out of here. jenna: that sounds perfect, that's the way we want to end the weather report. i know you've got to get back and check those hurricane reports as well. still a cat 1-rbgs still a hurricane. we can't disregard that. >> we can't disregard that but it's weakening. jenna: good news. thank you very much. jon: the maps aren't to -- up to date because t
